About us

Who are we?

MicroShade's history starts in 2003, when the company was founded as a spin-off from the Danish Technological Institute following an idea to integrate solar cells in glass facades. The solar cells are designed to promote energy-neutral air conditioning, whereby the power generated by the solar cells is used to remove surplus heat caused by high levels of solar irradiation, a well-known problem in modern glass buildings.

In 2004, the idea was further developed to also include a groundbreaking passive solar shading system built into insulating glazing. The design is intelligent, meaning that the solar shading adapts to the height of the sun in the sky. Since then, the idea has been further developed and fine-tuned in close cooperation with a number of knowledge centres and architects.

In 2009, Vækstfonden and the Danish Technological Institute made a substantial investment in MicroShade to promote sales and the production of the MicroShade® solar shading as well as further develop MicroShade® Power, which comprises transparent, solar-shading solar cells built into glass facades.

In 2009, MicroShade® was introduced to the market and installed in a number of reference installations in offices and institutions.

MicroShade A/S specialises in developing and marketing advanced, transparent solar shading solutions. Our mission is to create a good working environment and reduce energy consumption in modern buildings with large glass facades, using aesthetic and maintenance-free solar shading.

MicroShade A/S is a technology and knowledge-based company working in partnership with a number of knowledge centres, including the Danish Technological Institute. The company was founded in 2003 and is owned by Vækstfonden, a Danish state investment company, and SET Ventures.

At MicroShade we encourage a good working environment in modern glass buildings.

MicroShade co-operates closely with the worlds leading glass- and building component manufacturer Saint-Gobain. Saint-Gobain is represented in more than 66 countries, and has 180.000 employees worldwide. In Europa, Saint-Gobain is leading in the facade marked. All glass is delivered through the subsidiary Glassolutions, where more than 10.000 people spread over 200 locations advise, calculate, produce and distribute glass to all of Europe.

MicroShade is primarily produced in two high quality factorys in Poland and Germany. Glasssolutions have seen the potential in MicroShade from the beginning, and they are today using MicroShade as spearhead on a number of prominent projects. Glasssolutions and MicroShade have delivered glass for a lot of prestigious projects, among others Nordeas Trading Headquarters, Danish House of Industry, Copenhagen Towers, Kopenhagen Fur and Carl Zeiss Headquarters.

Pilkington is one of Europes leading manufacturers of glass for the auto- and building industry. Pilkington has during the last last years especially been focused on deliveries to the large window manufacturers like for example Velfac, with whom MicroShade also co-operates.

Pilkington is ownes by NSP Nippon Sheet Glas that is the worlds leading manufacturer of float glass for the auto- and building industry. NSP is situated in Tokyo and employes more than 27.000 people. In Scandinavia, Pilkington is represented in Glostrup and are furthermore producing glass for the Nordic marked in their factory in Halmstad.

HS Hansen is the leading manufacturer of facades in Denmark, and they are represented in all of Scandinavia, Germany, UK and Poland. MicroShade has chosen this co-operation because HS Hansen through developing their own profile system continuesly pushes the limit for the technical possibilities. A philosophy that together with engineering diligence are very compatible with MicroShade.

In regards to HS Hansen, the passive solar shading technology provided by MicroShade, fits very well with their facade program. It can contribute to making the facade impression lighter and move the limits for the art of the possible.

The co-operation has for example lead to making the facades for the Danish Experimentarium.

Velfac is the leading manufacturer of facade windows in Denmark. They are represented in Scandinavia, UK and Ireland. Velfac is a part of VKR Holding A/S that also owns Velux and Rationel.

Velfac sees a great potential in the passive solar shading that MicroShade can provide for their windows, because external solar shading in general blocks the view and the visual expression of Velfac’s slim profile series.
